How to be in the Presence of Someone Who’s Suffering

Most people struggle to witness another person suffering. They want to swoop in and help or offer advice to move it along. When a person is in pain, others will judge and conspire and plot to relieve them of the suffering.

The way people approach it is often based purely in their own discomfort. Someone who has a high tolerance for discomfort can allow more time for another to experience their pain. Someone with a low tolerance for discomfort may attempt to make a person who is suffering feel better or forget about the problem.

Attempts to move someone through their suffering are selfish. People are allowed to suffer and often, that which they’re suffering over is worthy of the time and space it’s taking from them.

People ask for the help they want and need. And they know themselves best. Each person’s entire path is best served when it’s walked by them and them alone.
